okay i dont get this shit about gabby’s hair.
she is an athlete. she sweats a lot. she spends her days working out and sweating. and that is what black girl hair looks like if you spend every day sweating.
what do you people expect? that in between her routines her mama is going to be there with a hot comb so her edges are laid like beyonce’s? srsly?
it just kind of pisses me off, because i can remember being sixteen and hearing black girls say how they didnt want to work out too much or do anything too athletic because they didnt want their hair to look bad. and i was the only black girl in my school with ‘natural’ hair and was in dance class for hours every week and sweated a lot. and i think about how many black girls would have taken a greater interest in athletics or sports or dance training, if they hadn’t been so afraid of their own hair.
and it’s interesting because “post-racial obama age!!!!” yet……there’s something in all this about internalized white supremacy and how black women just brings that shit out. think about this in relation to how people treat Willow Smith……it’s basically the same thing. how DARE young black women be free? how DARE the dedicate themselves to their own lives and happiness? how DARE they be whole and happy and lauded and fulfilled? when they don’t even have the decency to be PERFECT????
and i really think we all need o start being more critical about how Beyonce is so lauded because she’s so “perfect”: light skinned, wealthy, hard working without complaining, powerful but no so much that she’s a threat to her man or men generally………when Beyonce can “teach” people how to count and snatch wigs left and right but anyone who even slightly differs from that (Rihanna, Nicki, Willow, Gabby) is subject to intra-community violence (which is what this is, psychic violence/policing) of increasingly unbelievable proportions.
tl;dr black women are getting shat on with increasing frequency by *everyone* including other black women.
